Community Hikes
Join us for community hikes, where we explore Cincinnati’s streets, staircases, and hidden green spaces together. These guided walks uncover the city’s history, ecology, and urban design while fostering connection among neighbors and fellow explorers. Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to the city, each hike offers a fresh perspective on the places we call home.
Community hikes are FREE to attend. Tips welcome.
Walnut Hills Hike
Explore the many layers of Walnut Hills on a walk through its historic landmarks, arts, culture, and community life. From the Harriet Beecher Stowe House to Peebles Corner, we will remember places lost, celebrate what remains, and look at what is taking shape today.
Madisonville + Mariemont
Walk from the layered streets of Madisonville toward the carefully planned landscape of Mariemont. Along the way, we will explore the history, architecture, community stories, and subtle boundaries that connect two neighboring places with very different ideas about how a community takes shape.
Mt. Airy Forest + Creamy Whip Social
Escape the summer heat with a shaded hike through Mt. Airy Forest, followed by ice cream and conversation at Putz’s Creamy Whip. Woods, hills, good company, and soft serve make for a pretty perfect summer outing.
POSTPONED: Deer Creek Commons
Join us for an urban hike through the hidden contours of the old Deer Creek Valley. Beneath highways and pavement, the land still remembers. We’ll trace the slopes that once framed Deer Creek Commons, reading the rise and fall of the streets for echoes of a vanished green hollow.
Eastern Stars
Wander the hills of Mount Lookout and beyond on a whimsical neighborhood ramble through leafy streets, hidden hillside steps, and sweeping overlooks in Cincinnati. Beginning and ending near Mount Lookout Square, this moderately hilly walk explores the gardens of Ault Park and passes the iconic Cincinnati Observatory for a morning of charm, views, and a touch of cosmic wonder.

About the Experience
So, What is a Jane’s Walk?
Join Urban Rangers Midwest for a special walking event in honor of the International Jane’s Walk Festival, a global celebration of the life and legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs. Each year in cities around the world, people come together to walk, observe, and share stories in their neighborhoods—embracing Jacobs’ belief that cities are best understood and shaped by the people who live in them. Find out more about other Jane’s Walk events at janeswalk.org
Who was Jane Jacobs?
Jane Jacobs was an urbanist and writer best known for her influential book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, where she championed the idea that cities thrive through diversity, density, and vibrant street life. She believed that the best urban planning comes from observing how people actually use and shape their neighborhoods, not from top-down policies that ignore community needs. Her teachings are deeply relevant to Cincinnati, where questions of urban renewal, gentrification, and preservation remain pressing. Jacobs' emphasis on walkability, mixed-use development, and community-led planning offers a powerful lens through which to understand both the resilience and the challenges facing our neighborhoods today.
Our Jane’s Walk
Our walk will take us through Over-the-Rhine and the West End, two of Cincinnati’s most historically rich and rapidly changing neighborhoods. As we move through these streets, we’ll reflect on Jacobs’s principles of walkability, community-led planning, and the vibrant life of streets and sidewalks. Together, we’ll contemplate the ongoing impacts of urban renewal, gentrification, and preservation—asking the same questions Jacobs posed decades ago: Who builds the city? Who benefits from change? And how can we keep our neighborhoods diverse, inclusive, and alive? Come walk, observe, and reimagine Cincinnati—just as Jane would.
